Day 1

PORTLAND
|
Arrive in Portland and take some time to explore the "City of Roses." Despite its humble beginnings as a lumbering center in 1845, the city has developed into a sophisticated metropolis. Visit the International Test Rose Gardens with its 400 varieties of roses on 4 acres of land and great views of the city. Sample haute couture and hot cuisine in Portland’s Pearl District. Walk around town and take in the atmosphere.

PORTLAND » COLUMBIA RIVER GORGE » MOUNT HOOD » WHITE RIVER FALLS » PENDLETON (313 mi / 501 km)

Your first adventure starts east of Portland through the Columbia River Gorge where you will have the opportunity to view many waterfalls. Your next highlight is one of the most majestic peaks of the Cascade Mountains, Mt. Hood. Continue east bound through one of Oregon’s secret hideaway where the White River plunges 90º over a basalt shelf at the White River Falls State Park. The final leg of today’s journey will take you along the Columbia River to Pendleton, where you will overnight.

PENDLETON » BAKER CITY » HELLS CANYON » ENTERPRISE (226 mi / 362 km)

Today you will head south-east along the Blue Mountains and part of the Oregon Trail. In Baker City you begin your journey on Hells Canyon Scenic Byway. This route takes you through many geological formations, historic sites, farm, agricultural and ranch land, mountainous vistas, deep canyons, small towns, as well as wild and scenic rivers before you arrive at your destination in Enterprise.

ENTERPRISE » LEWISTON / CLARKSTON » COEUR D’ALENE (204 mi / 326 km)

Head north into Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. In Lewiston-Clarkston discover the history of the Lewis & Clark 1804-1806 Expedition. Cross over the confluences of the Snake & Clearwater Rivers into the state of Idaho. While in the area, possibly visit the Nez Perce National Historical Park. The winding road to the north leads you through small villages and towns and the mighty Coeur d’Alene Indian Reservation until you reach your destination.

COEUR D’ALENE » SPOKANE » GRAND COOLEE DAM » YAKIMA (280 mi / 448 km)

Depart Coeur d’Alene to the west into the state of Washington, through Spokane Valley for a possible wine tasting. Continue via a detour to Coulee Dam, one of the largest structures in the world then travel along the lakes of Banks, Lenora and Soap. Finally cross over the Columbia River into Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park before arriving into Yakima named after the Yakama tribe.

YAKIMA » JOHN DAY FOSSIL BEDS » BEND (329 mi / 526 km)

Drive along the boundaries of the Yakama Indian Reservation and enter Toppenish, where you’ll want to wander its streets and view the city’s 70 murals. Continue south through Status Pass into Brooks Memorial State Park and along the Simcoe Mountains where you might catch a glimpse of wildlife. Cross over the Columbia River into Oregon through the Columbia River Plateau wheat-growing region, over the John Day River and into the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument area. Take short hikes at the monument’s different sections. Check-out its museums, especially the one on paleontology. A must see is the yellows, golds, blacks and reds of the Painted Hills. The last trek of your journey will take you through the Ochoco National Forest before arriving into Bend.

BEND » SALEM » PORTLAND (179 mi / 286 km)

Travel north today from Bend back to Portland. On the way, pass through Oregon's Capitol City of Salem and take some time to visit the historic district, or stroll through downtown before continuing to Portland. Last chance to savor the serene tranquility of this unique Northwestern city before departure.
